The High School: Under falling support beams we go!

One regret from this adventure is not asking more questions. Locals are an incredible source of history and stories, but at the pace we were moving, it felt daunting to stop and “hit the pause button” in case it meant missing out on something else.

A single glance at the blown-out high school made it clear the building had long since surrendered to the elements. Roofs had collapsed, asbestos lurked in corners, and walls had crumbled from fire damage—it’s a wonder any part of it is still standing.

The gym was the heart of the site. Tattered blue curtains hung like a melancholy backdrop to an already somber scene. The rope swing swayed gently, its eager participants long gone.

Every step had to be carefully placed; some floors were soft with rot, others brittle with age—a nerve-wracking thought when you know a wrong step could end badly. While most corners of this massive structure gave up few secrets, simply exploring its ruins was a thrill in itself. With this site closing soon, I’m grateful to have experienced it before its final chapter ended.
