The Bowling Alley: A surprising discovery!

In 1966, Oldsmobile introduced a stunning new car—the Toronado—the first front-wheel-drive automobile ever produced in the United States.

Beautiful from nose to tail, the Toronado went on to debut several other industry firsts, including side-impact airbags. I’ve spotted these stallions at car shows across my province, but they’re a rare sight up here. So you can imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon three in a row! The one I photographed, from what I can tell, was a 1977 model.

The bowling alley itself has been gutted, leaving few traces of its vibrant past. Its architecture is one of the only clues hinting at its former glory. Once boasting both a movie theatre and a bowling alley, this facility was a rare luxury for such a remote military base.

Next door, the community center stands silent, with a thrift store locked up tight and an old post office now gutted for storage. While these buildings have been stripped of much of their essence, the personal mementos left behind are more than enough to tell a wealth of sombre stories.
