The Upper Rec-Centre: Abandoned Gateway to Fun

Like its ruined older brother, Anyox, Kitsault was built with every conceivable amenity to ensure a remote mining town could thrive. In what I’d call a stroke of brilliance, the designers decided to incorporate not one, but two recreation centres—and for the upper site, they spared no expense.

This colossal structure features a full-size curling rink, a movie theatre, a pub, squash courts, and at one time, even a bowling alley.

Remarkably, every corner of this building has been preserved in pristine condition. If a population were to return tomorrow, I have no doubt that with the flick of a switch, it could be up and running again. Not bad for a facility that’s over 40 years old.

Walking through the curling rink is simply breathtaking. Its design allows natural light to pour in between the support beams, creating a stunning atmosphere. The Maple Leaf Pub is undeniably charming, with a European-inspired design that perfectly complements the mountain community aesthetic.

It goes without saying—if you were bored living in this community, you simply weren’t trying hard enough.
